Questions About Portraits, Photographers and Your Photoshoot:

- What should I look for when choosing a portrait photographer?
Look for a photographer whose style matches your vision, check their work on Instagram and their website. Read reviews or ask for referrals, ensure they have experience in the type of portrait you want, and reach out and talk with them to discuss your needs. A phone call or text is FREE!

- What types of portrait photography styles are there?
Common styles include traditional, lifestyle, candid, environmental, glamour, editorial, and fine art. Each style has a different approach to capturing the subject and evokes different moods. I focus in candid, fine art and glamour (see definitions in the next section).

- How much can I expect to pay for a portrait session?
Prices can vary significantly based on the photographer’s experience, location, and session length. Typical fees can range from $150 to $1,500 or more. You pay for what you get. Make sure the pricing is clear on their website, talk with them and ask for clarification as to charges.

- What should I wear for my portrait session?
Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Solid colors and minimal patterns are often recommended. Avoid clothing with large logos or distracting designs. Coordinate, but don’t match, if there are multiple subjects. Talk with your photographer to plan your outfits. Bring clothes to the shoot in case you need to change, or change your mind.

- How long does a typical portrait session last?
A typical portrait session usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the type of session and the number of locations or outfit changes. There should be details on the photographers website as to the time the shoot will take. You should plan to arrive early so that you can start on time.

- What is included in a typical portrait photography package?
Packages often include the session fee, a set number of edited images (light retouch gin the skin and hair), prints or digital files, an online gallery for viewing, and possibly additional services like makeup or styling. Makeup and styling will be an additional fee.

- How do I prepare for a portrait session?
Prepare by discussing your vision with the photographer, selecting outfits in advance, getting plenty of rest the night before, and planning the logistics (such as location and timing). Find reference images on Google, Pinterest or Instagram and share them with your photographer as you plan the shoot. This will ensure you get the looks you want.

- Can I choose the location for my portrait session?
Yes, many photographers allow you to choose the location for your session. Discuss ideas with your photographer, considering the aesthetics and accessibility of the location. I am primarily a studio photographer, I like to make images in my studio but I am open to location shooting.

- How long does it take to receive the final photos?
Delivery times vary, but it typically takes 2 to 6 weeks for your final photos to be edited and delivered. Always ask your photographer for their specific timeline. I take a maximum of five business days to deliver your images.

- Do I need to provide props for my portrait session?
It depends on the concept of your shoot. If you want specific props, you should communicate that with your photographer ahead of time. It’s generally a good idea to bring personal items that reflect your personality or interests.
